24/05/10 - CQC Stars burn themselves out
At last someone in CQC has seen sense and signalled the end of the star rating system for care homes.
John Burton, the head of ACM, warned that the star rating system would be disastrous a year before CSCI put them into action.
'Star ratings have not only wasted a huge amount of time and money that could have been spent on proper inspection,' claims Burton, 'but they have resulted in many good homes closing and residents of those homes having to move. This misguided and inaccurate system has tied up the time and effort of care home managers who have naturally felt compelled to try their best to get a high rating, but the ratings were based on the wrong measures. This system took power away from residents and relatives and put the future of their homes in the hands of an arrogant and insensitive quango, more interested in its own status and survival than in the wellbeing and security of the people living in the homes.'
Burton continues: ' CQC claim that they want to hear from everyone in their forthcoming consultation. ACM have already sent in our comments and suggestions and attended and spoken at CQC functions. However, CQC claim never to have heard of ACM! We are willing to continue to spend time and effort helping CQC. Ten years ago I sent a well-worked out and tested inspection format based on the (then) new National Minimum Standards to their predecessor national inspectorate (NCSC). Answer was there none - not even an acknowledgement. CQC could learn a lot from ACM, but are they willing to listen?'
